Ambiguous language can easily mislead. I recently applied for a teaching job at the local college and was amazed when my usual rejection letter didn't appear but an invitation to interview did! This isn't to be a normal interview, however, in fact the actual interview isn't guaranteed at all. I first have to prove I am worthy of interview by giving a presentation. If I pass the presentation stage then I'll be granted an interview. Although, I can understand the reasoning behind this, I can't help but think someone who is very swish at presenting will get an interview where as someone who is very nervous will get left behind! I'm the later of the two.
The presentation, the second page of the letter outlines, is to introduce the topic of referencing to a class of AS-Level students.
The key words here are PRESENTATION and INTRODUCE. So am I required to teach or present? What do the interview panel require? I wrote to the college to ask.
A reply came back.
Not once was the word 'teach' used in their reply.. and now they've included the phrase 'based on' so the lesson I present doesn't have to be the lesson I've planned, just based on it? Like a film of a book which takes the story and adds new characters, new setting, but keeps the scene in the cafe where the couple break up!?
Am I being pedantic here? Or is it obvious to everyone but me what they are asking me to do? I wrote back again.. This time hoping for a clear response..

You are required to make a 10 minute presentation to the panel, explain how you would introduce the topic of referencing to a class of AS students in a creative and interesting way. This activity would form the first part of a session lasting an hour.

I have an interview and wanted some further information about the presentation I am to give.
In the invitation to interview you have stated “You are required to make a 10 minute presentation to the panel, explain how you would introduce the topic of referencing to a class of AS students in a creative and interesting way. This activity would form the first part of a session lasting an hour”. I am a little confused.
Am I to give a presentation about the lesson I would give, or an I actually going to be teaching the first 10 minutes of a lesson?
Moreover, are you expecting me to go into details about my starter; how it fits into different teaching and learning styles, how many minutes it lasts, then explaining the main tasks within the lessons, how I account for differentiation within student learning etc.
OR are you expecting me to teach the first ten minutes of the lesson to the panel?
Kind Regards
A reply came back.
Hello
With regard to your recent enquiry, the presentation should be based on the first 10 minutes you would deliver to a class of students. You have been asked to provide a lesson plan for one hour and supporting resources including Power-point presentation etc that you would use with this group during the one hour session.
I hope this answers your queries and good luck with the interview.
Kind Regards

With regard to your reply, just to clarify..And finally.. after 3 emails, 2 phone calls, over 3 days.. I got some sense out of the college with this reply..
You are expecting me to assume the panel are AS students and teach the first ten minutes of the lesson? I understand that I'll be providing lesson plans and resources for the lesson.
Am I correct?
Yes please Barry - you are correct.I've probably shot myself in the foot now, at the interview they'll remember me as the guy that didn't understand that deliver and present meant teach!
Many thanks
Personally I think you were quite right to get exact clarification. Surely it shows them that you care enough about the process to contact them beforehand and that's a good thing right? Very best of luck with it all and I hope it goes well for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Froggy, I hope so
