A few days ago a child asked me what was the time and almost instinctively I started to roll my sleeve up, when I realised I hadn't worn a watch in years. I started to wonder has the watch been left on the glass jewellery shelf in place of the mobile phone? Has the watch now become a pure fashion item instead of an essential useful object? Below are my watches through the decades.

| My 80's Star Wars Watch |
I remember the first watch I had, was a typical 70's leather wrist strap that was an inch wide with a smaller metal watch mounted on it. A bit like the one pictured only lighter leather. I was always a little embarrassed wearing this watch as other kids at school had digital watches and I had this really old thing that looked prehistoric to my modern eyes.
Then in the 80's I got a Star Wars watch which I loved to death... and incredibly I've found a picture of it online. This was a great watch because it played the Star Wars theme tune - the problem was - I had really bad excema and my arms were constantly shedding skin, which got into the watch.. and eventually I couldn't see the display! My mum had to send it back. I got a few digital watched after that but nothing that kept in my memory as much.

| 00's Metal Strapped |
In the 90's I got a watch similar to the one pictured here, leather strap, silver/gold analogue dial with date inset. however the strap kept snapping, I pulled it really tight around my wrists. I had several new straps fitted but each snapped after a few months.
In the noughties I got a metal strapped watch for my birthday from my dad. Similar to the one pictured, but without the digital display, I wore it until the clasp snapped, in around 2005 - I got the clasp fixed then it snapped again. Around the same time I got a mobile phone with a clock on it, so ditched the watch for the mobile. I haven't worn once since.
I miss my watch.. does anyone else?
I still wear a watch every day and it isn't digital either. It is waterproof though as I am accident prone. I used to have a James Bond one which I got by collecting thrown away crisp packets for a week. I loved it so much especially the tinny Bond theme.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed this post, do you think you might take to wearing a watch again in the future?
I'm not sure Froggy, I have two watches that I don't wear, one needs a new battery, other a new strap- but I've a mobile that's got a clock on that goes nicely in my jacket pocket.. I'd like a retro watch.. but I can't see me buying one - it's a non-essential.
ReplyDeleteFair enough Baz, I think part of me is a luddite and the other part hankers for new gadgets!
